1) Review the patient information in the packet provided.
Pay attention to the overall health and medical condition of your client!
2) Part 1: In a well organized document (either paragraph
form or in bullet points) identify all of the things you need to consider when
designing your client’s exercise program based on the results of your client’s
PAR-Q form. What are the health conditions that you learn about? What are the
ACSM guidelines when designing a plan for clients with those health conditions?
Based on your responses to the above, identify what you will need to do during
every exercise session in order to insure the health and safety of your client.
What is the general outline for each workout session? What things do you need
to do, as a personal trainer, to protect your client (and, ultimately, protect
yourself from liability!)? Think of the standards of practice/risk management/professional
etiquette discussions throughout the course.
3) Part 2: Design a program for your client based on the
information provided in the packet. Your plan should cover a four-week period
of time and should be presented in a manner that your client can easily
understand what exercises should be performed even if you are not specifically
working with them on a given day.
Specificity is the most important component of this
assignment! Make sure you are paying special attention to days of the week and
times of the day your client will work out. For each day make sure you identify
the specific exercises and the intensities of those exercises (hint: use the
FITT principle to guide you with each exercise!). Make sure to include detailed
plans that include all components of an exercise session (warm-up, cool down,
etc.). Make sure that, for each component of physical fitness you are training,
you follow the ACSM standards/guidelines we discussed in the course. For each
exercise you select, provide a 2-3 sentence rationale for why you are including
this exercise? Does the progression from one exercise to another make sense?
(For example, if you are including pool work, don’t have that in the middle of
your program, as that requires changing twice, drying off, etc.)
Visual appearance is also important. Can your client follow
the plan? Frankly, is the plan fun to look at and visually appealing? Are there
links to videos of the exercise so your client can do them when they are not
with you? Does it inspire the client to want to continue the exercise program?
Is it too congested or too plain and boring? Or is is it “too busy”?
You do not need to use every color in the box of Crayola crayons, as that can
get distracting. Is it easy for the client to track and note changes in
intensities? And I am sure there are more things you can consider. Remember,
this is not busy work…use this to design a sample plan that you might use in
actual practice!
