Assignment 2: Research Proposal
Introduction and Literature Review

Short-Medium length paper (6- 8 pages in length, excluding title page, abstract, references, and appendices).
The purpose of this assignment is to feed into your Research
Proposal and provides an opportunity for early feedback. This paper
should form the basis of the “Introduction” section of your larger
research proposal (i.e., Assignment 3) and includes your thesis
statement and the literature review section. Your paper must adhere
to APA style. This section should demonstrate your ability to describe,
critically analyze, and integrate the findings of research-based
articles. Be sure to highlight any theoretical or conceptual approaches
being used, as well as identifying key concepts.
Minimally this paper must include the following
(1) Title Page (proposal title, your name, running head – see APA manual)
(2) Abstract (brief summary and purpose of proposed study
including rationale, aims/objectives, thesis statement or research
question, significance of research)
(3) Introduction Section (see APA manual)
Introduce the Problem: Introductory paragraph (or two) where
brief background information is provided, importance of study and
rationale, and your thesis statement.
Review of Literature: This is the main body of your paper. The
key concepts should be defined, theories or models (if being used) are
explained, and the literature is critically reviewed and gaps are
identified.
Conclusion paragraph (or two) where your approach to solving the
problem is presented. This might include the proposed research, the
research question(s) and any hypotheses.

This is an essay for a NURSING EDUCATION master’s degree.
The research question I’d like the investigate is the impact bedside nursing staffing has on
patient safety. Ideally you should first define what “safe staffing” in nursing entails (you can find more information here: https://www.icn.ch/sites/default/files/inline-files/ICN%20PS%20Evidence%20based%20safe%20nurse%20staffing_0.pdf), and whether safe staffing reduces instances of patient harm. Patient harm can be defined as any incident that results in death or harm through pressure injuries, infections, falls, suicide attempts, and so on — there is lots of research on this.
The bulk of the essay is a literature review that explores literature related to safe staffing and patient harm. The review should survey scholarly articles relevant to my research question, and
by so doing, provide a description, summary, and critical evaluation
of these works in relation to the research problem being investigated.
Concepts I wish to explore all relate to “safe staffing” and “patient safety”.
Use findings gathered from the literature review to propose a solution to the research question in the conclusion. For example, “research has found that various safe staffing initiatives have refuced instances of patient harm, therefore one can recommend that hospitals implement the following interventions…..”
