Goals and Required Elements
Community Mental Health Promotion Night
Your Public Health Department is planning a night of raising the awareness about Mental Health in your community. There will be several speakers and mental health topics. All logistics (place, time, transportation, child care, etc., for the meeting and your presentation will be taken care of by the Public Health Department – You just have to speak.
The goal of the assignment is for you to apply what you have learned in this class about mental health and mental health promotion regarding the topic of depression. You have been asked to speak on the mental health topic of depression and prevention.
Among the items to consider in your presentation regarding depression and prevention might be: What is depression?; Who does it affect?; At what age might depression begin?; What are the determinants of depression; What are the risk factors and protective factors for depression?; What are the biological, environmental, and behavioral influences related to depression?; What are the symptoms of depression?; Examples of Depression Prevention Programs that work?; Where does one turn for help? and What organizations can provide help and how does one connect for help?
You will demonstrate your ability and knowledge by investigating resources in your community, studying scholarly research, reflecting on your work in this course, and creating a presentation to promote mental health awareness and education for community members at a gathering sponsored by the City or County Public Health Department. What you will produce from your work will comprise three elements:
A formal paper written in APA style – This is your script for the Power Point Presentation and contains the details.
A formal presentation to the audience – PowerPoint 10-15 slides and should be planned to last between 10 and 15 minutes.
A publicity flyer for your presentation or an informational handout that can be distributed either in print or electronically by the sponsor (the Public Health Department) to the audience they invite.
Research and Reflection Formal Paper:
There is a lot of creative energy and effort that goes into being a Health Educator, as well as, into creating effective and useful Health Promotion actions. Much of this âenergyâ takes place behind the scenes â in oneâs brain and heart. By becoming more aware of this process you may be able to create additional community health promotion projects in the future more mindfully, and with deeper understanding. The purpose of writing this formal paper for your CMHPP is for you to document your research, creative process, and what you learned while creating your CMHPP.
Another goal for this part of the CMHPP is for you to reflect on what you are learning and how you are learning. By raising your personal awareness of how you learn and create you may also find ways to increase your level of learning in other classes, and how to help other people develop similar insights and understanding.
As with any formal paper, you will need a cover sheet, an introduction, the body of the paper (including in-text citations), a summary, and a reference list. (APA 7th edition style)
A suggestion for completing the requirements for the formal paper is that you keep a journal or jot down notes as you work on your CMHPP. This may help you complete some of the following sections of the formal paper more easily.
Introduction – What will the presentation’s topic
Creative Process â Reflection (this might be part of your introduction)
Briefly described your creative process for creating your CMHPPâ Here are some sample questions to help get you started on this partâ¦How do you go about thinking up a promotional presentation? Where do you get your ideas/inspiration from? What are things you do or people you talk with or resources you use to create with?
What are some questions you needed to ask in order to create this project?
Where did you find your answers?
Were their any particular emotional reactions to what you learned or saw in the process of researching and creating this project?
Body of the Paper
What is depression?; Who does it affect?; At what age might depression begin?; What are the determinants of depression; What are the risk factors and protective factors for depression?; What are the biological, environmental, and behavioral influences related to depression?; What are the symptoms of depression?; Examples of Depression Prevention Programs that work?; Where does one turn for help? and What organizations can provide help and how does one connect for help?
What are the take home messages for the audience (could be part of the summary)
What do you believe are the three most important messages included in this community mental health promotion presentation?
Why are these the most important elements?
What is the most challenging aspect of mental health promotion?
How did we overcome this challenge?
Formal Community Mental Health Promotion Presentation (PowerPoint):
Note: If you have another idea for how to complete this section other than using a PowerPoint, please send me an email with your idea. Creativity is encouraged â you are not locked into having to use PowerPoint for this section
For the presentation portion of your CMHPP you will be creating a formal presentation as if you were actually going to present to an audience. This is your opportunity to act in the role of a Health Educator. Your goals are to create a presentation that will raise the awareness about mental health, mental health prevention, and provide them with specific information that they can directly apply in understanding mental health and depression. In your presentation you should include what you want the audience to be able to either do, know, understand, and/or demonstrate as a result of participating in your presentation.
Remember that the slide content usually has talking point for you the speaker and the audience as takeaway points. Be sure to consider the slide color and text color combination for best readability.
Since we cannot see/hear your presentation, in addition to creating the slides for your PowerPoint, you will also need to include what you would say to accompany each slide in the notes section (This can come from the formal paper).
Next choose either a flyer or handout â you do not need to produce both.
Flyer – This can be used to promote the upcoming Community Mental Health Night:
Part of creating awareness is to let people know when and where they can receive information. For this element of your CMHPP you will create a promotional item targeting your Public Health Department audience to let them know about your upcoming presentation. You may create this element in a simple, traditional way, such as, creating a flyer or you may do so in a digital way such as an email invite, web page or other idea of your choosing for the Public Health Department to distribute.
OR Presentation Handout/Brochure – this can be given to the audience the night of the presentation:
Lecture style education (talks, PowerPoint presentations) has many limitations including how much and how well people can retain information from this method of conveying information. So, to off set the potential loss of information, and aide in retention of information, by your audience, you may wish create a handout/brochure which would be given to them after the presentation.
The handout/brochure should include information about the main points you want your audience to do, know, or understand from your talk. The handout/brochure should also include real resources in your community where a person could go for additional information, support, involvement and/or follow-up.
The Public Health Department will print and distribute the handout/brochure for you or send electronically to the audience from their sign in sheet.
