Analyze the potential effectiveness resulting from professional or nurse-provided social
support versus enhancement of social support provided by personal relationship and social
networks for parents of children with chronic mental illness.
Social support from various social organizations and people benefits parents of children
with chronic mental illness in various ways. First, the support helps parents better cope with the
stress associated with chronic mental illness. For example, enhancement support from friends
and family can improve a parentâs mood, reduce anxiety, and help the parent better cope with
stress (Scharer et al., 20019). Second, social support provides parents with practical and
emotional assistance. For instance, social support from social networks such as Facebook can
help connect parents with other parents of children with chronic mental illness. This type of
connection provides support and practical advice that can help the parent better care for their
child (Ward, 2011). Third, social support can help improve parentsâ mental and physical health.
Other social networks, like churches or community-based support groups, can provide childcare
or transportation whenever needed. Finally, enhanced social support can help to improve the
quality of life for parents of children with chronic mental illness. This can be achieved through
different means, such as by providing financial assistance, respite care, or access to mental health
services (Scharer et al., 20019).
The parents receive social support from different sources such as family, friends, and
professionals or nurses. While any support provided professional or to the parents is critical,
support resulting from professional or nurse-provided social support is more beneficial than
enhanced social support provided by social support groups and social networks. The first reason
is that professional or nurse-provided social support is more reliable. This is because the support
is not based on personal relationships and social networks, which can change over time (Pasman,
2018). For example, a friend may move away, or a family member may pass away. In contrast,

professional or nurse-provided social support is more likely to be consistent over time. The
second reason professional or nurse-provided social support is more beneficial is that it is more
likely to be tailored to the specific needs of the parents (Ward, 2011). This is because
professionals or nurses have more training and experience working with parents of children with
chronic mental illness. They are also more likely to be familiar with the resources available to
parents. Therefore, they can recommend specific resources to help the parent better cope with
their childâs chronic mental illness or address the childâs health situation. Finally, professional or
nurse-provided social support is more likely to be confidential (Ward, 2011). This is important
because parents may be hesitant to seek help from family or friends due to the stigma associated
with mental illness (Pasman, 2018). When parents are assured that their information will remain
confidential, they are more likely to seek help and support.
