Hannah has been a RPN for 3 years and has been practicing part-time at a long-
term care facility since she graduated from college. Hannah is very passionate about
caring for older adults but has been looking for full time employment since graduation.
Recently she moved to a new community for a full time job as a home care nurse.
Mr. and Mrs. Mitchel have been her clients for the past four months and they
remind her of the many residents from the long-term care facility as well as her
grandparents. Mrs. Mitchel is 81 and has had diabetes for 16 years and now has
complications as a result of the diabetes. The most significant complication is renal
failure. Mr. Mitchel is 84 years old and had a stroke 18 months ago and suffers from muscle weakness as a result of the stroke which has decreased his mobility ability.
Hannah tries to schedule her visits to Mr. and Mrs. Mitchel for the end of the day so that
she may have extra time with the couple as they seem to really enjoy the time that she
spends with them Five days ago, Mrs. Mitchel is having a lot of trouble with maintaining her blood
sugar levels and is admitted to the hospital. Every day that Hannah can fit it in, which is
most days during the week, she spends her lunch hour at the hospital with Mr. and Mrs.
Mitchell visiting.
One day Mrs. Mitchel is busy having an assessment completed by the Nurse
Practitioner when Hannah arrives so she has lunch with Mr. Mitchel at the hospital
cafeteria. Mr. Mitchel expresses how challenging it is for him to be travelling back and
forth to the hospital, to look after himself as well as the house and their pet dog, Marley.
He feels heartbroken and has been going home and then travelling back, when Mrs.
Mitchel is having an afternoon nap. He tells her that it would be so much easier if he did
not have to do the extra trip in the early afternoon and he asks if Hannah would be able
to help him find someone to feed and walk Marley. Hannah feels very bad for Mr.
Mitchel and decides to support him by feeding and walking the dog daily.
