Susie Walking Bear Yellowtail has forever changed history in the nursing profession. Amongst many things Susie did she was an advocate for Indian Healthcare. She was an orphan as a young child and was then sent to Indian boarding school. Susie was the first to become a Registered Nurse of the Crow descent (Arguimbau et al., 2014). Susie began to work at the first government-run Crow agency hospital (Arguimbau et al., 2014). As Susie Yellowtail traveled to other reservations, she noticed the same problems (Arguimbau et al., 2014). Susie noticed many children were dying to due to lack of healthcare, many women were becoming sterilized without consent, and there was a lack of indigenous culture in Indian healthcare (Arguimbau et al., 2014). Susie Yellowtail served on many committees and councils to advocate for Indian healthcare. She was even an appointee to the President’s Council on Indian Education and Nutrition and the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare’s Council on Indian Health (Arguimbau et al., 2014). She was also a founding member of the American Indian Nurses Association (Theobald, 2020). Susie Yellowtail seen the way indigenous people were living and how they were in dire need of healthcare and sought out to help with this issue. She not only educated many Indians but also helped incorporate their culture with healing practices. She helped incorporate this by having traditional tribal healers come visit with the patients (Arguimbau et al., 2014). Susie Yellowtail played many roles in the nursing profession that she was also a midwife. Susie was pregnant with her third child and decided to go to the hospital (Theobald, 2020). After she had given birth, she had come to realize that she was sterilized without giving consent for it during her stay at the hospital (Theobald, 2020). She became a midwife to help mothers give birth on the reservation. No one else would have to go through what she went through. She was not quiet about what happened to her, because many other mothers had gone through the same thing (Theobald, 2020). She was a nurse that was not afraid to speak up. Susie is the true meaning of what being a nurse is. Susie’s legacy continues today. She fought for minorities to have access and education for safe healthcare. She also fought for the Indian culture to be included in medicine. She paved the way and motivated many other Native American Nurses. The crow people still refer to her as their “bright morning star” (Arguimbau et al., 2014)
