1. My topic in health science that I believe is worthy of investigation and will culminate in a Research Project is mental health. Mental health includes emotional, psychological, and social well being. This affects how we think, feel, and act and determines how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Factors that contribute to mental health problems include: biological factors such as genes or brain chemistry, life experiences, such as trauma or abuse, and family history of mental health problems. Mental health problems are very common. “Mental illness can influence the onset, progression, and outcome of other illnesses and often correlates with health risk behaviors such as substance abuse, tobacco use, and physical inactivity” (CDC, 2005).
Early warning signs of mental illness include: eating or sleeping too much or too little, pulling away from people and usual activities, heaving low or no energy, feeling helpless or hopeless, experiencing mood swings, hearing voices, and thinking of self harm, etc. There are nearly 300 mental disorders listed in the DSM-5. DSM-5 is the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, which is a handbook used by health professionals to help identify and diagnose mental illness. Main groups of mental disorders include: mood disorders such as bipolar disorder or depression, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia, eating disorders, trauma related disorders such as post traumatic stress disorder, and substance abuse disorders. There have been many debates in the medical community on what is and is not considered a mental illness.
According to the CDC, mental disorders account for approximately 25% of disability in the United States, Canada, and Western Europe and are a leading cause of premature death. The estimated lifetime prevalences for mental disorders among the U.S. adult population are approximately 29% for anxiety disorders, 25% for impulse-control disorders, 21% for mood disorders, 15% for substance-use disorders, and 46% for any of these disorders. Poor mental health often leads to problems such as social isolation, which disrupts a person’s communication and interactions with others. Untreated mental health problems can also have negative influences on homelessness, poverty, employment, safety, and the local economy. According to the CDC, the challenges for public health are to identify risk factors, increase awareness about mental disorders and the effectiveness of treatment, remove the stigma associated with receiving treatment, eliminate health disparities, and improve access to mental health services for all persons, particularly among populations that are disproportionately affected.
Public health agencies could promote mental health by incorporating it with chronic diseases prevention efforts, conducting surveillance and research to improve evidence about mental health, and collaborating with partners to create comprehensive mental health plans.
Mental health is integral to overall health and well being. It should be treated either the same urgency as public health. Treatments for mental health are available and effective. Treatments for mental health typically always include psychiatric counseling. Medications are sometimes prescribed as well. There are various forms of medications available for mental health as well as different forms of therapy/counseling.
