The use of spiritual care in nursing is an important part of the patient’s treatment because the patient’s health depends on spiritual well-being. There are many ways to assess the spiritual state and beliefs of nurses and patients. For example, these tools are most frequently used: SCIP, the HOPE, and SCCRS.
The first tool to consider would be the spiritual care in practice (SCIP), used to determine the patient’s response to spiritual interventions. It is a test that consists of 12 questions that presuppose answering using the Likert scale (Harrad et al., 2019). It helps nurses understand to what extent they provide spiritual help. The SKIP test also determines how the patient responds to different methods and how nurses help him/her spiritually.
The HOPE is a teaching tool that enables evaluate spirituality in a conversation with a patient. It is important to understand what religious beliefs the patient has and how he/she associates them with their illness. HOPE questions have their decoding: H stands for sources of hope, O – organized religion, P – personal spirituality, and E – effects on health care (Pallipedia, (n.d.). Numerous tools are available for evaluating the patient’s spirituality to facilitate the administration of relevant interventions (Büssing, 2021). It is crucial to identify suitable assessment tools for evaluating spirituality and how nurses can improve the patient’s health. The FICA, HOPE questions, and the Open Invite are the essential assessment instruments providing efficient approaches to eliciting patients’ thoughts on spirituality.
For instance, the FICA instrument helps evaluate the spirituality of the patient. The tool is based on four main aspects of spiritual assessment—the presence of faith, belief, or meaning, the significance of spirituality on the patient’s life, and the impact specific belief systems and values have on the patient’s health care decision-making. Other concerns include the spiritual community and interventions for improving the patient’s faith. Professional nurses can use this instrument by framing questions rather than relying on the checklist (Shinall Jr, et al., 2018). Therefore, this instrument helps guide the conversation between the patient and healthcare providers to influence approaches to providing treatment and aiding recovery.
Secondly, “HOPE questions” is one of the most critical tools for assessing a patient’s spirituality. Professional nurses can use this instrument to identify a patient’s spiritual suffering and needs concerning the diagnosed health condition. The success of this tool depends on the nurses’ understanding of the patient’s spiritual gifts—it aids the nurses in understanding the patient’s source of joy as far as the entire healing process is concerned (Büssing, 2021). Nurses can customize care to suit the patient’s spiritual needs based on the patient’s source of joy. The intervention is crucial in providing patient-focused care within the spiritual realm.
