– your term paper will reflect your
understanding of the applied nature of psychology in the realm of social justice. Specifically,
you will be asked to write a paper that addresses the potential role of social psychology in
promoting social justice and equity. You may choose to deal with a case that concerns the
criminal justice system/law enforcement OR any other issue where you feel that there is inequity
or discrimination where understanding of and application of social psychological principles can
have a positive impact.
– EXAMPLE- By examining a recent case in law enforcement/criminal justice that was considered
controversial because it encroached upon a person’s civil liberties or human rights (where, for
example, there was alleged abuse of power, abuse of authority, misconduct that violated a
person’s human rights or right to due process), you will discuss how social psychology can
intervene. You will be attempting to understand how a social psychologist would approach this
case (i.e. how they understand this case, what assistance they could offer in trying to support the
community or healing and reconciliation) or help community leaders, law enforcement officials
regain community trust. In other words, how might a social psychologist work with a divided
community.
Regardless of what your topic is, you will consider a main topic in social psychology. Possible
topics include: the issue of implicit bias, prejudice and discrimination, deindividuation,
groupthink, and cognitive dissonance and how they may have played a role in the outcome of
events, and what social psychology has to offer in terms of efforts to rebuild and heal a group of
people, a community, or other constituent group.
Ultimately, you are to consider what theories, approaches, and ideas social psychology has to
offer that would support this rebuilding.
Your paper is to be written using APA style, should be 5– 8 pages in length (including a
reference page), using appropriate citation, and 2 – 3 scholarly articles
