In Hispanic and Latino adults with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes, what is the effect of participating in an educational community diabetes program, compared to having no supplemental lifestyle program or education, on lowering hemoglobin A1c within six months?
This study revealed findings that can be applied to nurse practitioner practice in primary care settings, especially for Hispanic/Latino populations, to promote healthy behaviors. The study has confirmability and transferability. Using culturally sensitive digital storytelling interventions in a group setting and a population’s native language can foster social support and motivation for the self-management of T2DM. This study and its educational group-based intervention can be replicated on a larger scale in various rural and urban communities. Additionally, facilitated group discussions can be run by Spanish-speaking nurse practitioners or community health workers to help improve and acknowledge culturally relevant obstacles to Hispanic/Latino patients with T2DM. Future implications of this study may include a control group who do not receive the intervention, increased occurrences in group sessions, family participation in sessions, and pre and post-intervention measurements of hemoglobin A1C levels.
