Advertising agencies often make use of either, or all, of these theories as they try to get us to buy what they are selling. For this assignment, you need to watch television for a few hours, and pay special attention to the commercials. Keep paper and pen with you as you watch so that you can write down what you are seeing, and then find an example for each of the following. Write a paragraph with at least a few sentences for each, about what they are selling, and how they are applying learning theories to get you to buy their product. Do you think that they are successful? Why or why not?
1. Find one commercial that makes use of classical conditioning. Remember that classical conditioning is about associations, and conditioned responses. What are they selling and what is the association? One possible example of this might be an ad for deodorant – we associate body odor with people not wanting to be around us. If we use their product that won’t happen.
2. Find one commercial that makes use of operant conditioning. Remember that operant conditioning is about rewards and punishments. An example here might be an ad for a buy one get one free sale-you buy one item, and as a reward you get another one. Another example might be a furniture store that encourages you to shop in their store because they have free coffee and cookies.
3. Find one commercial that makes use of observational learning. One example might be a celebrity driving a certain car or using a certain product, and you want to be like them.
