understood in terms of social influence. How do the concepts of conformity,
compliance, obedience, and the principles of persuasion explain why seemingly
normal people can end up engaging in extreme, even violent or suicidal behavior
(e.g., David Koresh’s Branch Davidians, Jim Jones’ People’s Temple, or Marshall
Applewhite’s Heaven’s Gate). A thorough
answer will discuss the theories and the relevant empirical literature
underlying these concepts and then apply those theories to specific aspects of
behavior common among cult followers (e.g., the role of authority in decision
making processes).
