Nurse managers are not new. In the past, since many hospitals were sites for nursing training schools, nurse leadersâcalled matrons at the timeâoften became designated or undesignated managers of the professional nurses overseeing much of the day-to-day healthcare operations. Present-day nurse managers have clinical responsibilities related to their nursing profession and administrative duties reflecting typical business management.
In this assignment, you will select key categories of responsibilities of a nurse manager and create a guide of evidence-based procedures, tips, and resources to support those responsibilities.
Step 1. Review
Review course materials and conduct additional research to determine the clinical, administrative, advocacy, and leadership responsibilities of a nurse manager.
Step 2. Categorize
Determine a strategy for categorizing and organizing the responsibilities and tasks of a nurse manager into 8-10 categories. Identify evidence-based best practices for each category. These categories may not encompass every responsibility or task assigned to a nurse manager but should represent significant ones. Consider focusing upon the tasks and responsibilities for which you have the least experience or expertise.
Step 3. Identify
Identify key factors associated with each of the categories you determined in Step 2. For example, communication, technology (specific), regulations or guidelines, stakeholders, procedure, documentation, etc.
Step 4. Create
Create a visually appealing (color, graphics, images, etc.) one-page resource of key reference information, techniques, and best practice âtipsâ for each of your 8-10 categories. Utilize the key factors you determined in Step 3 in a strategic and consistent way as labels or topic headers. Each sheet should be easy to read and understand for quick reference when the situation arises. Conduct a web search for âmanager toolboxâ or âhealthcare manager toolboxâ to view some sample reference sheets and materials. The Learning Objects page also has some useful resources.
Step 5. Acknowledge
Write a 1- to 2-paragraph acknowledgment dedicating your work on this guide to a professional leader or colleague who has demonstrated inspiring characteristics and/or has challenged you to grow professionally.
Step 6. Submit
Save your work as a PDF file and submit your Nurse Manager Guide, including:
an attractive cover page,
a dedication,
an introduction,
8-10 pages of category-specific tips, and
an APA-formatted reference page.
