Students will utilize the nursing policy tab on the American Nurses Association’s (ANA) website to access current Position Statements or they may use one of the policies uploaded to D2L under the content tab. Students will select a position statement that provides an ethical dilemma for the public and/or healthcare providers. Using the bioethical principles that will be discussed in lecture and throughout assigned readings, the student will determine how this policy meets current ethical standards of care and if it could be affected by the legislative process. Students will describe why the selected policy is important to ethical practice within the nursing profession and post on the corresponding discussion board for faculty and peer evaluation and feedback.
In this discussion board, faculty will guide students on their ethics conversations. Distance education platforms that facilitate this process may be utilized. The nursing ethics and policy essay rubric will be used to evaluate this assignment. Comments and suggestions by reviewers will focus on encouraging critical thinking skills and improvement of professional writing for the nursing discipline. Students will develop this Position Paper with ethical argument, which may be submitted for use as their legislative letter. This assignment will be completed during week 5.
Specific Directions
The paper should be no longer than 5 pages including a title page (no abstract), body and references. Follow the outlined format below and use the highlighted words as subheadings for each section.
Title page – includes paper title, your name, West Chester University and date.
Body – includes the following:
Introduction – briefly introduce your selected ANA position statement, describing its associated ethical dilemma for the public and/or healthcare providers.
Bioethical principles – using the bioethical principles that have been discussed throughout assigned and supplemental readings, determine how this policy meets current ethical standards of care within the nursing profession. You may want to provide professional nursing examples (case studies) to demonstrate this relationship. Use correct ethics terminology while discussing your position statement and ethical dilemma.
Legislative influence – describe how your selected position statement could be affected by the legislative process. What can nurses do to influence change at the state and federal legislative levels? Has the ANA lobbied for legislation to support your selected position statement? If yes, describe what was done, and if not, describe what could be done.
Conclusion – describe why your selected position statement is important to ethical practice within the nursing profession. Consider what steps should be taken to ensure this policy continues to support ethical nursing practice.
References – include a reference page, making sure to cite all references in the body of your paper.
