important theme in the history of psychology is the transition from
prescientific attempts to understand the mind and behavior to a scientifically
grounded discipline and profession. I. Describe several of the practices or approaches to
helping people deal with their mental problems that existed prior to the
development of scientifically-based treatments. How might they have been beneficial and what, ultimately, was wrong with
these ways of treating mental problems?
II. Once psychology became a truly scientific area of
study, psychologists attempted to apply the principles and findings of research
to helping people. This drive toward
application is, perhaps, most salient in the field of clinical psychology. Describe how clinical psychology arose and
the forces that influenced its growth and development into its own profession.
