Part 1: The focus of Paper 4 is on identity formation. Since identity consists of many different dimensions, you will choose a particular ‘lens’ or entry point from which to study identity development. Perspectives or ‘lenses’ include ethnicity, gender, sexuality, aging, and spirituality. Your goal is to describe the main theoretical and research findings on identity development from your selected perspective. A Reading Resource list for the various perspectives (ethnicity, gender, sexuality, aging, or spirituality) is provided below. Allow plenty of time for your background reading and research. Remember, you are only reading those articles listed under the lens that you have selected (see below). Identify and incorporate material from at least one other primary outside source on the subject. It may be beneficial to use material from the course textbooks or other secondary sources.
Part 2: The Interview
Find a conversation partner who is not a student in this course. Conduct a 30-minute interview with that person about your topic. You might want to come up with 6-8 open-ended questions to ask your interviewee. For example, you might ask them to share their thoughts on how gender impacts their sense of self and/or their perceptions of others. Keep the interview brief (very informal) but creative. Use fictional names; respect confidentiality, but do have fun!
Part 3: The Paper
Write a 10-page paper (excluding title page and references; no abstract needed) addressing the readings. Make sure you offer definitions and descriptions of identity development in a general sense, as well as identity development through the particular lens/perspective that you selected. Highlight the main theoretical and research findings from the readings. Your paper should demonstrate your understanding of the articles you read, and offer your critique and/or position on this material. Be sure to incorporate information from your interview. Conclude your paper with a brief reflection on your learning process with regard to the subject area.
Reminder: Adhere to APA writing style (7thed) and closely proofread to avoid grammatical errors and strengthen organizational flow.
Note: Please review the grading rubric for this assignment before you begin to write.
