Part 1
Read chapter 4 of the text attached to this assignment (https://openstax.org/books/psychology-2e/pages/1-introduction) and answer the two following questions
There are movements to change the time that high school students are in school. The majority of high schools start before 8am, but people are pushing for them to start later in the morning. Based on what you know about sleep, what would you recommend? Be sure to explain why psychology supports your position.
2. Pauline smoked cigarettes for 10 years and now smokes e-cigarettes that contain nicotine. She has decided that she wants to quit nicotine altogether. Describe what Pauline will experience and have to learn to cope with during her recovery.
Part 2
Read this (https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/how-responsible-are-killers-with-brain-damage/#:~:text=Charles%20Whitman%20lived%20a%20fairly,including%20his%20wife%20and%20mother.&text=His%20autopsy%20suggests%20one%20troubling,for%20emotion%20and%20behavioral%20control.) And answer the following discussion questions
Background on Charles Whitman: As explained in the article, Whitman was the UT-Austin gunman that in 1966 murdered 14 people on campus and 2 people at his home (his wife and mother). In the letter that he wrote about deciding to kill his wife, Whitman had requested an autopsy because he felt something had to have been wrong with him. After he was killed by police an autopsy was conducted and a malignant tumor was found on in amygdala.
Discussion Questions:
1. Given what you know about the brain, what impact might the tumor on his amygdala have caused? Consider both the function of the amygdala itself and any relationship the amygdala has with other parts of the body.
2. The article discusses the use of neuroscience in legal matters. Had Whitman been captured alive and put on trial, what impact should his tumor (this is assuming they found it) have on determining either (or both) his guilt and the sentence he should serve for murder? Make sure to walk through the different ways to consider this evidence and not just giving me a 1-3 word response.
3. Based on what you now know about biopsychology as well as the nature v. nurture debate, how do you think we should handle potential biological influences on crime? Things to consider: Should someone with a biological malfunction be treated differently by the legal system? How should we consider this in trying to decide if they are responsible and aware of the crime? How should we treat someone with a brain abnormality as compared so someone who comes from a highly abusive relationship or household? Be sure to support your opinions with evidence from your book and the lectures.
You may consider more than just the amygdala here when considering brain abnormalities.
