One of the goals of this class is for students to be able to demonstrate knowledge in conducting a biopsychosocial assessment within the correctional setting. After reading the Course Materials during Week 4, you will be responsible for applying the knowledge gained from the lesson to an exercise that will be due at the end of the week. The exercise can be found under Assignments and will require you to read a case study and answer both general and specific questions related to the case study and conducting a biopsychosocial assessment. The biopsychosocial assessment is useful in obtaining a complete picture of the inmate’s background and history. The biological section includes things like physical illness and family history. Some of the things included in the psychological section include: past diagnosis of mental illness, past treatment, childhood history, and past abuse or neglect. The social section can include things such as gang affiliation, peer and family relationships, substance abuse issues, gambling issues, etc.
Although there is usually a list of questions that a psychologist, social worker, case manager, probation or parole officer, etc. can ask, they way they are asked varies among different individuals. The more you complete assessments, the better you will get at asking questions to obtain as much information as possible, which will, in turn, assist with the person’s treatment plan.
This week, we will be exploring what information should be gathered when completing a biopsychosocial assessment.
The case study that is due at the end of the semester is an example of a biopsychosocial assessment.
