Journal Assignment (5 points)
Students will submit a journal entry. The entry will be 200 to 250 words in length and is designed for students to reflect on what they want to learn; what they learned to further their knowledge and skills as an early childhood professional; and how this information will be beneficial in their career. Answer these three questions about the information in this lesson:
What are at least two areas in which you have knowledge?
What two areas do you want to know more about regarding this topic?
Why is this topic of interest to a professional working in a community child or family organization?
Fathers play an important role in prenatal development and the health of the baby.
Review the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s “Preconception Health and Health Care: Information for Men
(opens in a new tab)
” to learn about the Centers’ recommendations for men and their role in prenatal development. Think about a friend, neighbor, or family member who recently had a baby. What role did the father and other males play to help ensure healthy prenatal development?
Prenatal Development
Conception occurs in the upper portion of the fallopian tube when the ovum and the sperm meet. The sperm fertilizes the egg and the fertilized cell begins to divide. After this first division, the organism is referred to as a zygote. If this zygote divides into two separate organisms, identical twins develop (monozygotic twins). If the mother releases two eggs that are fertilized by two different sperm cells, then non-identical twins or dizygotic twins will develop.
During fertilization, the chromosomes from the mother and the father combine to form a specific combination of genes that determine the unique traits the child will possess or the genotype, the inherited genetic code. The fertilized cell divides and within each division is an exact copy of the genetic material. The process of mitosis occurs when a cell copies its own chromosomes and then divides to form a new cell.
Two patterns are evident during the growth of the embryo. The head and the upper body form before the arms and the legs. This process is referred to as the cephalocaudal pattern. The proximodistal pattern refers to the growth of organs near the midline before those further away from the midline. Organogenesis occurs during the eighth week after conception and the process where each of the major organs and systems are differentiated within the embryo.
