The DNP has been in existence for approximately 30 years. A DNP, or Doctor of Nursing Practice, trains to become an expert clinician by using research and knowledge to create more efficient practices and promote better patient outcomes (Thomas, 2018). In other words, the DNP will apply their knowledge and research into practice. Some of the roles a DNP can take on are APRN, Nurse Informaticist, Clinical Nurse Educator, and Healthcare Executive (Southard, 2021).
A PhD, or Doctor of Philosophy, prepares the nurse to research and test theories related to nursing practice (Thomas, 2018). This contributes to the body of nursing knowledge and standards of nursing practice. In other words, they focus on discovering new knowledge. A PhD often focuses on teaching. Some of the roles a PhD can take on are Grant-Funded Nurse Researcher, Nursing Faculty Member, Data Analyst, and Healthcare Executive.
I would choose to pursue the DNP because I prefer to be involved in the clinical practice of nursing with patient involvement, not the research aspect. I would like to be involved in improving nursing practice and having an impact on patient outcomes. I believe there is more of a variety of areas you can use a DNP in nursing while working directly with patients (Southard, 2021).
