DIRECTIONS
Last week you worked on your topic of interest, focused on types of methods, and address the ethical and key strengths of the articles reviewed. This week the focus is on the PICOT question for the evidence-based considerations related to the topic of interest. A discussion question is the submission for this week. as noted in Module Three, students are to:
Post a brief description of your clinical issue of interest. This clinical issue will remain the same for the entire course and will be the basis for the development of your PICOT question. Describe your search results in terms of the number of articles returned on original research and how this changed as you added search terms using your Boolean operators. Finally, explain strategies you might make to increase the rigor and effectiveness of a database search on your PICO(T) question. Be specific and provide examples.
Searching Databases
When you decide to purchase a new car, you first decide what is important to you. If mileage and dependability are the important factors, you will search for data focused more on these factors and less on color options and sound systems.
The same holds true when searching for research evidence to guide your clinical inquiry and professional decisions. Developing a formula for an answerable, researchable question that addresses your need will make the search process much more effective. One such formula is the PICO(T) format.
In this Discussion, you will transform a clinical inquiry into a searchable question in PICO(T) format, so you can search the electronic databases more effectively and efficiently. You will share this PICO(T) question and examine strategies you might use to increase the rigor and effectiveness of a database search on your PICO(T) question.
To Prepare:
Review the Resources and identify a clinical issue of interest that can form the basis of a clinical inquiry.
Review the materials offering guidance on using databases, performing keyword searches, and developing PICO(T) questions provided in the Resources.
Based on the clinical issue of interest and using keywords related to the clinical issue of interest, search at least two different databases in the Walden Library to identify at least four relevant peer-reviewed articles related to your clinical issue of interest. You should not be using systematic reviews for this assignment, select original research articles.
Review the Resources for guidance and develop a PICO(T) question of interest to you for further study. It is suggested that an Intervention-type PICOT question be developed as these seem to work best for this course.
By Day 3 of Week 4

Analyze levels of evidence in peer-reviewed research

PICO(T): In nursing (P), how does workplace violence prevention programs (I) compared to no programs (C) affect a nurse’s perpective of violence in the workplace (O) within six months of implementation (T)?
The topic of clinical interest I chose is workplace violence towards healthcare providers. The American Nurses Association (2021) defines workplace violence as actions that occur while working that are physically or psychologically damaging to the worker. Workplace violence is growing concern. In 2018, healthcare workers accounted for 73% of non-fatal workplace injuries (U.S. Bureau of Labor, 2020). Unfortunately, little has been done to address to workplace violence and employers are not required to implement violence prevention programs. Many efforts have been made as far as legislation and regulations to create a safer environment for workers such as penalties. Many studies that I have read, found that highest incidence of workplace violence often happens to emergency staff and mental health providers. The databases I used included the Walden Library, Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Medline and ProQuest. In each database, I narrowed the dates from 2017-2021 and I also selected peer-reviewed articles only. This would allow me to have the most up to date and valid information. I used terms such as “workplace violence”, “healthcare”, “nursing” or “healthcare providers”. The most sources I obtained was 843. Walden Library (2021) suggest using Boolean terms, such as “and”, “not” and “or” to generate more and precise results. This was an effective technique that did generate more results and allowed me to exclude resources not relevant to my topic. For example, many of my results were studies done in China or other countries when I am focusing on studies done in the United States. When I typed “not China”, this generated less results but they were more relevant.
