What is the role of the nurse leader in assuring that costs remain low without jeopardizing patient care?
For-profit institutions are cost conscious and prefer lower cost structure (Cheney, 2019). For-profit institutions operate cheaper. The nurse leader ensures the schedule is “balanced”. The nurse leader determines whether staffing is adequate based on the skill set of the individuals scheduled. For example, if the daily census allows, another nurse aide may be scheduled instead of a nurse to help with patient care.
Does the role of the nurse leader differ in for-profit health care institutions versus not-for-profit healthcare institutions?
I don’t think there is a huge difference between nurse leaders in for-profit and not-for-profit institutions. The nurse leader advocates for the staff and the patients for their safety and in delivering quality care. They make sure the staff feel supported with their concerns as well. There might be more pressure for nurse leaders in for-profit institutions to minimize costs and losses, because these institutions focus on making sure the unit does not operate over the budget (Cheney, 2019).
What are the implications of the Affordable Care Act on nursing care and reimbursement for services?
The Affordable Care Act increased the number of people with health insurance by making more people eligible for Medicaid and mandating employers to offer health insurance (Gaffney & McCormick, 2017). This made healthcare more accessible, and more people are able to seek treatment. The increase in demand for care would mean an increase in demand for healthcare workers. However, there might not be enough people in the workforce to care for those seeking treatment, which can lead to decrease in quality of care. Reimbursement for services serve as incentives for primary care physicians (Gaffney & McCormick, 2017). Individuals have more choices to get treatment and healthcare providers to see more people. Due to reimbursements, the percentage of primary care physicians that saw Medicaid enrollees increased from 58.7% to 66.4% (Gaffney & McCormick, 2017).

The role of a nursing leader in assuring that costs remain low without jeopardizing patient care involves educating staff on the importance of scanning supplies that are being used for patients, being proactive in quality care and fiscal spending, considering the various factors that can cause high spending, and ensuring that patients receive quality care regardless of budget constraints (Galen college of nursing, n.d.).
Besides the difference in how a for-profit and not-for-profit healthcare institution receives its funding and distributes its resources, there is generally no change in the role of the nurse leader of either institution (Profit vs. Nonprofit Hospital Administration – the George Washington University Online Degrees, 2019).
The Affordable Care Act has brought greater access to healthcare services to individuals of various populations, improved the quality of patient care, and lowered healthcare costs. The ACA has set limits on what claims can be denied by insurance companies, set up preventative services, ensures consumers are aware of the costs of various healthcare services, and provides incentives to encourage providers to give high quality patient care.
