Author Cynthia : The lesson I have learned from the Applied Project is to seek clarity early on at the project’s initiation from the instructors. I believe I misunderstood balancing the hypothetical and theoretical approaches to address the task. I was unsure how to approach the research paper until our team submitted the outline. The first few weeks of the Applied Project were slow in the development process for me. I was unclear about the direction of what I was doing. If I could have had those first few weeks back, I think I would have been able to go in-depth in my research segments instead of only producing high-level information.
Communication is another big lesson I learned during this process. I should have taken the initiative during the team meetings and shared my research progress and information regarding the various immunoassay and their mechanisms of action, including antibody and antigen production. The team conducted their research independently, but some members may have conducted their research at a different level or speed. A positive aspect of doing research alone is that we could cover more ground in the various areas of the project. A negative part is that we did not collectively discuss the topics that the team should research. In retrospect, I would have liked us to take one week and study a topic or two and bring back this knowledge to the team meeting.
Another lesson I learned was that Project Management was essential; I enjoyed performing the trade-off of responsibilities with my team members. Each member took their role seriously and made significant impacts on our team deliverables as well as collaborations.
Overall, the applied project experience will help develop and conduct projects in the future. Project Managers have a demanding role with many moving pieces and the responsibility to encourage team members to complete their assigned tasks based on their part and obligations. The weekly assignments and meetings were significant aspects that kept the applied project running and were conducted similarly to real-world project teams.
Author Sanaa: This research project has taught me several precious lessons I would always appreciate and hopefully apply in my future projects. First of all, I as I always used to illustrate how challenging the timezone of my teammates and I was during the research project timeline, this will be the most precious lesson I have learned especially when I have other personal work to handle in my life with non-fixed timings and work shifts. To explain this, time management is a valued key for anyone who have multi-tasks to handle, writing your upcoming tasks was a very excellent method to remind and structure your tasks in a simpler way to make them accomplished in your mind. This was in a form of an “individual progress report”. Secondly, we were not only working under one team conditions but multiple teams who should all collaborate to provide the final “product” which is our all main aim: To contain the spread of VARV22 in Alaska. This will help us to work more effectively in companies that rely on multiple departments to work together in order to finalize the ultimate final product or achieve the aim of this company. Thirdly, appreciation and consideration given to your teammates are very important. Working effectively with teammates who can’t give consideration to your personal matters or circumstances will produce an ineffective “product” or you will not be able to actually achieve your major final aim with the same efficiency level as when you work with considerable individuals. I am very glad that I work with supportive teammates which we all consider personal conditions for each other.
Lastly, working with supportive managers and supervisors/mentors used to be something very supporting during this applied project. It gives you a guide on the responsibilities of real managers/supervisors/mentors and why they are very essential in every project you might be involved in; their guidance and resources are very precious to effectively complete your project.
