Popular Media Article Evaluation Project
1. Find a popular media article that summarizes findings from a research study on any topic within the field of Psychology. You can find these by doing a Google search or by pursuing online sites like BuzzFeed, Time, etc. Be sure to find your article on a .com website. Note that the topic you select for this assignment does not need to be the same as what youâre using for the psychology myth literature review assignment!
2. Using clues in the article (look for the author names, university/organization the author is affiliated with) identify and download a copy of the empirical research article that the popular media article is based on. 3. Provide a summary of the popular media article. What is the main thesis or claim? Review the main sections of the study (if they are presented). What conclusions are made?
4. Provide a brief critique of the popular media article using 3 of the 8 elements of âUniversal Intellectual Standardsâ as described by Paul and Elder in The Miniature Guide to Critical Thinking Concepts and Tools (see below).
5. Provide a summary of the empirical journal article. This will be very similar to your article summary assignment. Provide a 1-2 sentence summary of each section of the paper. Introduction â what was the hypothesis or purpose of the study? Methods â Who were the participants? How were data collected? How were the IV and DV measured? Results â what were the main findings? Conclusion â what do these findings means, or what are the implications?
6. Provide a brief critique of the empirical research article. What are some of the limitations related to the methods â participants, study design, and/or how variables were assessed. What are the limitations related to generalizability of findings? What are the implications of the results of this study?
7. Evaluate how well the popular media article portrayed the actual empirical study. In other words, how well did the media article accurately report the findings. Did they address the limitations of the research? Was the conclusion appropriate â was it accurate, did it overstate the implications? You can also tie in aspects of your critique in #4 here.
Format of paper: Use TNR 12 pt font, double space. Do not number your responses. You do not need to use APA style for this assignment. No in text citations or reference page is needed. However, you should of course summarize both of your articles in your own words.
For #4, you are asked to select 3 of the 8 intellectual standards outlined by Paul and Elder in The Miniature Guide to Critical Thinking Concepts and Tools and address how well the popular media article uploads these standards. You can find this list of standards and definitions at the very end of this document. Rubric for Project
