Read the Learning Exercise 4.10 page 104 see the textbook for the information and the directions. Write a 2-3 page pager following the Exercise 4.10 and answering the questions.
As nurses, we are often confronted with ethical and legal dilemmas. Who are we accountable to? What are the patient’s rights to choose their medical course of treatment? How does this choice impact treatments ‘fitting in’ with what is best for the patient and his/her family? This can be a particularly difficult situation as the nurse is caught between the physician, the patient, and ethical principles. After some reflective thinking, answer the following:
To whom are you accountable? (Consider that there may be more than one person, organization, etc.)
What are the patient’s rights?
What ethical principle/s are in play in this scenario?
How can the law apply to the patient, nurse, and organization.
