Potential topics (not an exhaustic list by any means):
Azedra (iobenguane I 131)–this is NEW to Nuclear Medicine Technology!!!
PET myocardial perfusion imaging vs SPECT myocardial perfusion imaging
Theranostics/radiotherapy–
(I131 NaI for thyroid cancer or hyperthyroidism/Graves Disease, Y90
Sirspheres/theraspheres, lutetium Lu 177 dotatate, Xofigo-Ra223). You
may even give an overview of theranostics (what is it, how does it
work)—this is a BIG DEAL in NMT rigth now.
DaT scan for Parkinson’s disease
PET imaging for Alzheimers (there are a few radiopharmaceuticals that may be used).
PET/MRI
A. Consider a topic in Nuclear Medicine Technology that interests
you. You may pick one from the list or come up with your own topic.
B.
Research this topic. If you research a specific procedure/exam you
should include information on the radiopharmaceutical used, indications
for the exam, patient preparation, description/pathology of the disease
being evaluated or treated, etc. If you are selecting a topic to
overview such as SPECT, PET, PET/CT, or PET/MRI you may research how the
scanner works (ex.how the radiation coming out of the patient produces
an image), the types of studies performed, or even a
comparison/constrast between different modalities.
C. Write a 500
word essay. Submit as .doc or .docx. Assignment must be written in a
narrative/paragraph form. No bullet point. Please compose the essay in
“written voice” aka “formal” and not “spoken voice” aka “informal” http://facultyweb.ivcc.edu/rrambo/tip_formal_writing_voice.htm (Links to an external site.). You need an introduction, body, and conclusion.
D. Assignment length: double space, 1 inch margins, 12 font, 500 word
minimum, not including cover sheet (optional) and reference
page (required). If you choose not to do a cover sheet, you must
include your name and subject/title IN THE HEADER.
E. Include
appropriate references. A minimum of 3 references (at least one from a
peer-reviewed journal such as the Journal of Nuclear Medicine or Journal
of Nuclear Medicine Techology). All references must be current (within
10 years).
F. Proper citation required (APA). Please use spell check (I’m a horrific speller–terrible!!).
G.
Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Please refer to your student handbook
under Academic Misconduct (AR 2.3.11) regarding definitions and
sanctions for plagiarism. This assignment will be submitted with
Turnitin.com. You must have a turnitin.com score or <25%. Any Turnitin.com score of >25% will receive a score of 0.
