Research Assignment: Graffiti
The purpose of this laboratory exercise is to provide you with experience in performing a content analysis of graffiti.
PART I: Conduct your study as described.
Collect graffiti {at least 25 graffito observations} from restrooms (follow all rules/laws for entry), or other public places, on campus and/or in your town.
Decide which buildings and public places will be surveyed.
Record all graffiti in each place selected. Ensure all photos of graffiti are appropriate.
Categorize graffiti by content or theme. Previous research has he used the following categories: a) political statements or references to political candidates, b) humorous statements that that are not targeted, c) simple replies to other graffito that differs in content, d) references to sex, e) references to race, f) general insults that defame a group or individual, g) references to music, h) references to religion, i) references to fraternities or sororities, j) references to drugs, k) references to sports, l) references to environmental issues, m) statements that are philosophical and tone, and n) miscellaneous.
Analyze your results (i.e., total and percentage for each location and by theme). You may examine differences between male and female restaurants or dormitories (follow all rules/laws for entry), restrooms in different buildings on campus for example Arts compared to Engineering, restrooms and buildings in different areas of a city, restaurants in public places which provide different services for example college campus and bars downtown, and/or inside vs outdoor surfaces.
PART II: Submit a complete APA-style research report based on the study you conducted in Part I.
Find 3 recent (published in the last 10 years) research journal articles related to your variables to include in your paper (e.g., gender differences in graffiti/artistic expression, differences in graffiti themes by location, etc.).
Method: Describe the graffiti (i.e., how many {at least 25 graffito observations}), your recording method(i.e., photos), observation details (i.e., places surveyed), how you made sure that followed rules/laws for entry (e.g., asking your male classmate to take photos in the men’s dorm/restroom for you).
Results: What did you find? Use the results to answer your research question (e.g., ‘Are there more references to sports or to fraternities/sororities in graffiti on a college campus?’). Don’t forget your Table and Figure.
Discussion: Did your results support your hypothesis? What do your results mean?
