“Understaffing is a perpetual challenge that most hospitals and healthcare facilities have had to grapple with for a long time. That is the same situation our local hospital faces, and sometimes, the management is forced to outsource professionals when the workload is overwhelming for the current time. The emergency department (ED) is usually the worst hit, given that it is one of the busiest and most fast-paced departments in the hospital. Consequently, patients are forced to wait for long hours to get services, which compromises the quality of care. While the approach usually helps to alleviate the staff shortage temporarily, something must be done to provide a long-term solution.
The understaffing challenge calls for immediate attention as medical professionals aim to offer quality services efficiently and effectively. The two dissemination strategies I planned on using are, firstly all concerned parties must acknowledge that addressing understaffing at the ED requires teamwork. That component will ensure that the hospital promotes quality improvement (QI) during collaborative efforts. QI refers to a âprinciple-based approach to perpetually enhancing aspects of healthcare with a focus on iterative change, learning, and adaptationâ (Backhouse & Ogunlayi, 2020). Secondly, teamwork is crucial following its promotion of interprofessional collaboration, an evidence-based approach that boosts the realization of QI. The EBP technique will help provide a long-term solution to the understaffing challenge. However, it is important to acknowledge that adapting to interprofessional collaboration will present challenges as expected whenever a change is introduced within an organization. Accordingly, strategic and gradual execution will be instrumental in making a smooth transition.
In that light applying Lewinâs Change Model will ease the expected tension of introducing organizational changes. Lewin introduced a simplistic model that contains three stages of introducing and incorporating change in an organizational setup. The three steps are unfreezing, movement, and refreezing (Hussain et al., 2016). When organizations are unfreezing, employees and all involved parties are informed of the need for change on the target matter and briefed on the nature of change they should expect. Then the movement stage follows. It involves change being introduced and the initiators maintaining open communication channels. In this case, introducing interprofessional collaboration to address understaffing at the ED is the change. Lastly, we have the freezing stage, where the change gets inculcated in the corporate culture and becomes the new norm. The freeing stage will come at a significant time in the moving process. Eight weeks will be a sufficient period in the case study.
The change model only maintains its relevance when the leadership is supportive. Leaders should be involved in the change introduction and implementation. The ED department heads and all other heads of departments must be willing to engage in interprofessional collaboration and coordinate their teams. Also, the top management needs to be involved as the change will directly impact the teamsâ productivity. Therefore, the person-centered situational leadership style is recommended. The leadership style is adaptive to the prevailing situation while embracing team membersâ differences and maximizing individual strengths to achieve a common goal (Lynch et al., 2017). Interprofessional collaboration brings together professionals with different specialties and unique strengths and weaknesses. Therefore, the suggested person-centered situational leadership technique will be indispensable.
In conclusion, the EBP technique of interprofessional collaboration is crucial in addressing the understaffing menace in the ED. Suitable leadership style application is necessary to ensure success. Also, leaders must remember to be strategic and gradual when introducing change.”
