Students will write a 4 to 5-page research-based paper in current APA format that focuses on a DSM-5 diagnosis. More is fine, less than 4 pages results in a point deduction. Papers less than three pages will not be graded. Using the approved articles from your Annotated Bibliography address the questions below. If your articles were not approved, you will need to locate new articles of the correct source type. You do not need to submit a new ABIB.
DSM-5 (not 4!) criteria for the diagnosis (use “5” not “V” as the Roman numeral is no longer used) (Do not use the DSM or your textbook. Find this in one of your articles.)
What are the symptoms/triggers? What do they look like?
Is it common (i.e. many people experience it) or is it rare? (What groups are more likely to be diagnosed with this disorder?)
What is the etiology? Is this biological, environmental, or both? What are potential genetic influences?
What are treatments (NOT medication—psychologists can only prescribe in five states, so do not discuss medication or you will get a zero for the treatment portion.) Look for CBT, EFT, etc. These are broad categories and have specific techniques, so you will want to discuss and describe specific techniques that are used.
What life disruption occurs as a result of the symptoms of this mental illness? Address all areas (family, relationships, work, social interactions with strangers, functioning independently).
What is the prognosis if untreated versus treated effectively? In other words, if left unchecked how will symptoms impact one’s future work/relationships/life? What are the worst-case and best-case scenarios? If treated, will the person need a lifetime of maintenance care? (You may refer to medication generally in this section, such as “will need antipsychotic medication and a life-long series of doctor’s assessments to monitor for side effects” but this section needs to be very specific and refer back to life disruption discussion.)
The page length does not include the title page, abstract page, or references page. The 4 to 5 pages must be the writing/body portion of the paper.
This is an academic research paper. This paper is not about your personal opinions, rather it is an article review that discusses the research articles you have located. This is NOT an essay; it requires constant in text citation. It is an APA-formatted research paper using APA 7th edition. It must be an informative paper, meaning that for full credit your topic discussion must demonstrate understanding of the researched articles. For example, it is great if you want to discuss a case study about Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and that particular individual’s situation, but 99% of your paper should focus on the various aspects of GAD (etiology, symptom manifestation, treatment, and prognosis).
You must cite peer-reviewed sources in support of the information that you discuss. A minimum of eight peer-reviewed journal articles from 2017-2022 located in WTCC’s online database should be cited and referenced for this paper (although you are encouraged to use as many more as you would like). No other sources may be used. No books or web sites of any kind may be used. NOTE: Cite only the authors of your articles, do not cite who they cite. If the authors give incorrect information and you have cited them, this will allow me the chance to see why you have incorrect information, which makes a difference when papers are graded.
Here is the quick list:
1. Your paper must be 4 to 5 pages; your title page, abstract, and reference page are not part of that page count. For each quarter page under four pages, a five-point deduction will be taken. Papers less than 3 pages will not be graded. Longer than five pages is fine, less than four creates deductions.
2. Do not use quotes. Paraphrase and cite only. Cite constantly. I should see in text citations every two or three sentences (yes, even if it the same article being used). If you give a facts or discuss a definition there should be a citation since this paper is based on the research articles you have located, not on your prior knowledge. Any paragraph that does not have citations at least twice will not be graded. Remember that a citation is used with paraphrasing to demonstrate from whence the information was derived (i.e. this information comes from a certain article.) Even if the same article is used throughout that paragraph, you cite twice so that the reader knows that all of the discussion is research-based. Per the rubric five points will be deducted for each quote, so put the information into your own words.
3. Read your paper out loud and check your wording. Personal pronouns (he, she, they, their, his, her, them, I, my, we, our, mine, etc.) and contractions count as grammar errors. I will post an example of how to rewrite without personal pronouns.
4. Only peer-reviewed/scholarly academic journal articles from WTCC’s library database from the last five years may be used. No other source types (textbook, books, web sites, etc.) may be used. If I already approved your ABIB you may use those articles.
5. The paper should also include a cover page, abstract, and reference page. The paper must include an introduction and a conclusion in addition to the written portion. With the reference page, you may partially reuse your ABIB if the reference format was correct, but remove the summaries first. If you leave the summaries, you will lose format points.
6. Failure to use APA 7 format will result in an automatic 10-point deduction prior to rubric grading. A single APA error will only be a 2 pt deduction, so do not panic if you miss a space error, etc.
7. No emailed papers or late papers are accepted under any circumstances. Although the portal says you may submit up to 11:59p.m. often students find themselves unable to upload at the last minute, so plan on submitting a day or two prior. If the time stamp is midnight it is a zero, so start early. I personally recommend submitting your “finished” publish as soon as you can and then, if you choose to edit it further, can submit an updated publish before the due date/time. This will help in case something goes wrong and you are unable to submit on the due date. Missing a few points due to a few grammar errors is still better than a zero from missing the paper!
8. Only Word documents (.doc or .docx) will be graded. If you copy/paste your paper into the text box, or if you upload the wrong file type, it results in an automatic zero. You may submit up to four times, so if you catch an error you are encouraged to submit an updated/corrected version. I will only grade the last version you upload, so do not worry if there is some issue in an earlier version. If you are using a Mac and need to convert your paper, please contact WTCC’s IT group for help. If I cannot open your file, it is a zero.
