Discussion: Chapter12&13
Review Chapters 12 and 13 and consider various physical and cognitive milestones of adulthood. Examine Generativity by answering the following questions:
How have the settings of the “social clock,” or the timetable determined by a culture or social structure that specifies a “proper” time for certain events like marriage, graduation, and employment, changed since the generations before you? What settings haven’t changed?
How do you feel gender, aging, and socioeconomic status are related?
What do you think it means to be “successful” as an adult? How do you think others (either people you know or people you don’t know) define success as an adult?
4. Do you believe schools should start at a later time for high school and adolescentsâ adaptation? Why or why not?
Please be concise and cover your points in the discussion in 300 words or more using 3 paragraphs or more. Use information from your textbook or other sources and indicate the reference’s title, author, year and page numbers from where the information was paraphrased or quoted. Remember to post a reply to two of your classmates’ postings. No points are given for late postings.
Discussion Board (DB) Assignments:
Online discussion board postings will be assigned based selected readings (textbook/articles). A DB topic or question will be presented from material covered within each chapter (at times a DB topic may review a topic which is covered in more than one chapter).
Due dates and times for discussion topic posts and replies to peers are outlined in the course agenda and are due by 11:59pm on the respective due date.
There will be 13 discussion boards and you are required to participate in 11 out of the 13 discussions (15 points each).
I will grade all discussion boards using a rubric. Your discussion board response is worth 10 points, and each peer response is worth 2.5 points each.
Please note that I only grade first submissions of discussion board responses. Any submissions of “.” or anything similar as a placeholder to view others’ responses will be marked a zero.
Discussion Requirements
Discussion Points are awarded for comments that reflect that you:
have read the required text and readings
have prepared the discussion questions in advance
have thought about the content
have attempted to understand the readings
are applying concepts from the chapter to both your post and response
are able to apply the content to “real life.”
In other words, quality comments reflect effort, accuracy, and thoroughness. If you do not understand the material, you can still earn participation points by demonstrating that you have made an effort to understand the material and that you have read the text. Trying to struggle with and figure out the information merits points. I expect you to make posts that directly address the discussion questions as well as respond to others’ postings.
Cover your points in the discussion in 300 words or more, using 3 paragraphs or more.
Use information from your textbook or other sources and indicate the reference’s title, author, year and page numbers from where the information was paraphrased or quoted.
Remember to reply to two of your classmates’ postings.
No points are given for late postings.
You will not earn points for posts/replies that do not meet the above criteria or for posts/replies that simply reflect information from your personal life without incorporating specific concepts and understanding of the chapter. Further, for your peer responses you will not earn points by simply stating that you agree or disagree with a classmate without fully supporting your opinion with concepts from the course material. Your peer response must enhance your peer’s post while incorporating concepts from the course material directly related to the discussion question. Suggested length for adequate peer responses are 125-175 words per response.
