The shamanic worldview of health and illness states that spiritual energy determines individual wellbeing. Shamanism expresses that disharmony among people is manifested through illness and disease. Shamans have a connection to spiritual realms and can manipulate all realms (Bragazzi et al., 2018). Shamanism suggests that there is a connection between the spiritual and physical realm. The manipulation of the spiritual realm affects the healing of individuals and communities. Shamanic healing has various approaches for instance botanical medicine, change of diet, and physical therapy (Braggazi et al., 2018). The Shamanic View of health is strange to western society because they believe in spiritual energy.
Presently, many people are seeking shamanic healing when other medical treatments do not show improvement. According to shamanism, community conflict leads to illness. Diseases and illnesses manifest differently with underlying spiritual issues. Mental illness such as depression indicates an imbalance in the individual’s physical and spiritual energy (Şenel, 2019). Shamanism also states that energetic loss of any kind is exhibited through a sense of feeling uneasy or uncomfortable. Shamanism healing depends on the illness and is customized for every individual (Fontaine, 2019).
The nursing practice is dedicated to the wellness of an individual’s physical and spiritual being. Spiritual nursing care reduces patient’s anxiety and worries and increases hope in medical treatment. Nurse apply the shaman’s view of health and illness during care to restore the patient’s faith and strengthen their spirit (Harrad et al., 2019). Nurses should not think of spiritual care as a religious activity but rather as a different treatment approach. Spiritual care has various positive outcomes on the patient’s health since it builds tolerance towards the physical and emotional burden of disease.
