What is Eros?
The central theme of the Symposium is Eros. Describe was Eros is in all its forms and dimensions based on your selection of the commentary of the various participants.
The Greek words Eros and Philia (friendship from Aristotleâs Nicomachean Ethics) can both be translated as âloveâ. Compare and contrast the similarities and differences of these two related but distinct concepts.
Both Phaedrus and Pausanias discuss the role of Eros in achieving happiness. Phaedrus for example says that nothing imparts the âguidanceâ necessary for a human being in order to âlive wellâ (aka Happiness), âas well as Love.â Both speakers agree on the general relationship between Love and Happiness, but they do not understand that relationship in the same way.
