What is Eros?
The central theme of the Symposium is Eros. Describe was Eros is in all its forms and dimensions based on your selection of the commentary of the various participants.
The Greek words Eros and Philia (friendship from Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics) can both be translated as “love”. Compare and contrast the similarities and differences of these two related but distinct concepts.
Both Phaedrus and Pausanias discuss the role of Eros in achieving happiness. Phaedrus for example says that nothing imparts the “guidance” necessary for a human being in order to “live well” (aka Happiness), “as well as Love.” Both speakers agree on the general relationship between Love and Happiness, but they do not understand that relationship in the same way.
Pick ONE of these speeches and explain and analyze how they see Love leading to Happiness.

As we have seen in the Symposium one of the basic strategies of tyranny and totalitarianism is to “divide and conquer” the people in their relationships to themselves and to one another. Explain how this strategy works and how it is manifest examples in 1984.
A major form of control in 1984 is through language and ideas which regulate not only what people say, but also what and how they are able think about the world, themselves and their relationships with others.
Explain what Newspeak is and how is it used, as a form of speech and thought, as a strategy to control people. What is “doublethink” and how is it part of this strategy of control? What is the consequence of Newspeak on the psychology of the inhabitants of this world generally, including its impact on their relationship with themselves and each another?
