Part 1 Book Review (The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, 4 pages)
Write a 4-page reflection paper about The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Part 3 Research (4 pages)
The purpose of this 4-page assignment is to help you effectively communicate in writing about a modern public health problem (examples: teen smoking, diabetes, food insecurity, breast cancer, suicide, concussions, asthma, etc.). This assignment should be thoroughly referenced, with a minimum of 5 quality references. At least one of those references should be from a peer-reviewed journal article and the others can be from good quality web sources such as the CDC, American Heart Association, www.cancer.govLinks to an external site., etc. As a research paper, it should NOT be written in the first person, but rather objectively. (Do NOT include âIâ statements; do not include personal anecdotes or opinions. Think about this format: Fact (cite), fact (cite), fact (cite)

Describe the problem/disease/condition, including why it is important to public health.
Present epidemiological facts, such as incidence, mortality, prevalence, counts, rates. Identify and discuss any disparities by sex, age, education, etc. Do NOT choose a topic for which you cannot find the NUMBERS.
Describe what can be/has been done to improve the problem, including public health prevention strategies, include primary, secondary, and tertiary, if possible as well as existing public health programs, if relevant.
Part 4 Public Health (1.5 pages)
This assignment will help you think about the field of public health and the careers available for a public health professional.
Be sure to address all 5 parts in one cohesive essay with an introductory and concluding paragraph. Do NOT number each paragraph!
1. Medical Care vs. Public Health. Go to the public health websites and read the information. Based on the information provided, explain the major differences between medical care and public health.

2. Public Health Achievements. Read the first three pages of the 1999 CDC publication called Ten Great Public Health Achievements 1900-1999 (https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/pdf/wk/mm4812.pdf). Briefly discuss how your daily life is different as a result of one of these ten achievements.
3. Careers in Public Health. Go to the website and scroll down to see the list of top jobs in public health. Select one public health career that you could potentially see yourself pursuing, briefly describe the career, and explain why that career seems interesting to you. (You must choose a public health career even if this is not your current field of interest!)

School of Public Health (SOPH) Faculty: Briefly scan the biographies of the faculty within UNLVâs SOPH in our 3 Departments: Environmental and Occupational Health (which also includes Social and Behavioral Health); Epidemiology and Biostatistics; and Healthcare Administration. Which faculty member seems like they would be a good fit to work with towards the career you selected in #3, AND/OR which faculty has research that interests you that you might like to work on? Part 5 Historic event (1.5 pages)
This assignment will help you understand pivotal historic events in public health. Remember to review the Guidelines for Writing Assignments below and the Rubric for this assignment.
Read the â12 Diseases that Altered History (https://health.usnews.com/health-news/articles/2008/01/03/12-diseases-that-altered-history)â article. Select one of the diseases that interests you and conduct additional research from other reputable online sources about that disease.
Don’t forget an introductory and concluding paragraph that ties all the ideas together.
Provide a brief introduction to the disease (no more than half a page).
How might a medical professional treat the disease differently than a public health professional?
Identify one individual who was an important figure in public health and worked to address the disease. What did he/she contribute and how did it change public health?
Is this disease still considered a public health threat? Why or why not?
What was one critical change that occurred as a result of the disease and/or the prevention of the disease?
