There are a lot of different recommendations for giving presentations. According to Khan (2017), there are 9 best practices for implementing a community presentation. The first practice is to know your audience. We did this by figuring out a target audience a few weeks ago. My project was tailored towards older adults in assisted living facilities. The second practice is to tell a story. While presenting, I referenced a few experiences I had while working in assisted living that was the inspiration for this project. Helping patients manage their glucose level is important to me. Telling a story with your presentation leads to more dialogue as well as active and engaged participants. Khan also mentions less is more. I tried taking this into perspective while creating my presentation and educational tool. I wanted to give good information but keep it concise and easy to understand. I kept my poster board simple to look at visually and did not over crowd the board with information. I wanted people to be able to read the main points, then listen to me explain and give details about diet and exercise for glucose control. The fourth principle Khan recommends is creating visually striking slides. I tried to make my presentation aesthetically pleasing by using large fonts and using borders to create depth. A nice looking presentation also helps draw people to the education. Connecting to your audience is also important while giving a presentation. I had a small group I was presenting to, this made connecting easier. Using positive body language is another best practice. This is something I really had to work on during nursing school. I did not realize how much I use my hands or cross my arms while presenting. It really makes a difference in keeping people’s attention. The seventh practice is using humor and speaking naturally. Although I did not tell any jokes or have an ice breaker. I feel as though conversation happened naturally during the presentation and smiles and laughs were shared. Be prepared for questions. I felt pretty prepared for questions. The research I conducted over the last several weeks helped prepare me. I feel that I really knew the information I was presenting and was able to answer all questions that came up. Lastly, Khan recommends practicing before a presentation. I usually practice more before a presentation but as I stated before, I felt like I knew the information. I went over my presentation a few times and reviewed various questions and felt prepared. Overall, I feel I used all of these practices while presenting my community education project. I would say my education was impactful and I was able to leave pamphlets behind for residents to reference for diet and exercise recommendations.
