Emily Dickinson, “I Cannot Live with You” – Presentation
This week’s reading is a poem by Emily Dickinson called “I cannot live with you.” It was published in 1890, four years after her death. Emily Dickinson is one of the most famous female poets who wrote an extensive collection of works, as many of us already knew or learned in week three. She was a recluse for most of her adult life, so I like to consider that when trying to understand her writing.
This poem consists of twelve stanzas with four lines in each, except for the last stanza which has six lines. There is no explicit rhyme scheme, although some of the words do rhyme (up & cup, face & grace, eye & by, etc.). It is written in first person and addresses her lover, keeping with our theme of “love, marriage, and lust.” It is not a typical or happy love story, though; it is filled with inner conflict, unsatisfied love, and sadness.
The poem, along with many of her other works, is a bit hard to decipher upon the first reading. I had to read it several times to grasp what I think she is trying to convey. In my interpretations of the individual lines and stanzas (which could be very abstract), I tried to consider the context of the whole poem, along with the context of her life during the 1800s. Below, I will annotate the stanzas to share with you all my interpretation. I am sorry that it is a bit lengthy, but this is one of Dickinson’s longer poems, so there was a lot to understand. I refer to the person she is addressing as her “lover.”
