This assignment is intended to show an understanding of how our perception can be influenced by a number of factors. To show how that happens complete the following steps:
1. First, pick a song (from the link provided) and listen to a song forward.Link (Links to an external site.) (Jeff Milner Backmasking)
2. Second, listen to the song backwards without looking at the lyrics. Were you able to understand what the words were?
3. Third, look at the backwards lyrics and listen again. Can you understand the words now that you see the lyrics?
4. Fourth, try a couple of songs (some songs work better than others).
5. Explain why it was easier to understand the words when you saw the lyrics. How does expectation and past experience affect ability to understand the words. Look at perceptual set on page 146. Just a note: The songs are not saying any of those things!!!! So why can we hear the words when we read them?????
