Prevention is key when it comes to promoting a patientâs holistic health. Hence, one of the best ways to prevent a client from developing kidney disease is to ensure that they are not put at risk or at the very least, are able to limit their risk factors towards developing this disease. World Kidney Day (2020) describes eight golden rules that will enable a client to decrease their risk factors and optimize their chances of never developing kidney disease.
By keeping active and maintaining a healthy diet, this enables the patient to maintain a healthy weight. It has been proven that an ideal body weight for the patient will reduce the blood pressure and decrease the risk of chronic kidney disease (World Kidney Day, 2020). On that note, it is essential that patients also monitor their blood pressure and refrain from things like stress and consuming salty and fried foods. A normal blood pressure is below 120/80 in adults. Hypertension will be diagnosed if on two different days the systolic blood pressure is above or equal to 140 mmHg or the diastolic blood pressure is above or equal to 90mmHg (World Kidney Day, 2020). However, patients should not refrain from exercise or drinking fluids. It is of great importance for patients to maintain proper fluid intake. It is recommended that a client drinks two liters of water a day (World Kidney Day, 2020). Diabetes also plays a huge role in the formation on of kidney damage. It is important that patients receive an annual checkup and monitor their blood sugar, as prescribed, if they have or are at risk for developing diabetes (World Kidney Day, 2020). Smoking cessation is essential due to the fact that the chemicals in cigarettes have been shown to decrease the flow of blood to the kidneys, resulting in kidney damage and decreased function. Also, even seemingly harmless over- the- counter drugs, known as NSAIDS, can be detrimental to the kidneys. Patients should be advised that they should not take these medications on a regular basis (World Kidney Day, 2020). Lastly, patients should be made aware that if they have diabetes, hypertension, are obese, and/or have a family history of kidney disease (World Kidney Day, 2020) they are at risk for developing kidney disease.

The kidneys are critical organs to the daily functions and health of the human body. The main functions of the kidneys include removal of toxins, removal of excess water from blood, controlling blood pressure, producing red blood cells and to maintain healthy bones (World Kidney Day, n.d.). When the kidneys are damaged or impaired for an extended amount of time chronic kidney disease or CKD can occur. The leading causes of CKD are diabetes and high blood pressure. There is a correlation between health diseases and specific ethnic/racial groups. African, American Indian, Hispanic, Asian and Aboriginal populations generally have higher rates of diabetes and high blood pressure, which as mentioned previously are leading causes of CKD (World Kidney Day, n.d.). For example, in the United States, Native Americans are approximately 1.8 times more likely to be diagnosed with kidney failure as diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure among American Indians (World Kidney Day, n.d.). Moreover, Hispanic Americans have a 1.5 times greater risk for developing kidney failure than non-Hispanic Americans (World Kidney Day, n.d.). In Canada, Canadian Aboriginal individuals with End Stage Renal Disease have rates 2.5-4 times higher than the general population (World Kidney Day, n.d.). Social determinants of health are significant factors that affect the health care of these populations. A major health care barrier is low income. Individuals unable to afford items and food for daily living, often do not have the resources for adequate kidney disease preventive screenings and/or treatment. Language barriers and lower levels of education also impeded the quality of health care for certain cultural groups and increase the risk of developing kidney disease (World Kidney Day, n.d.). I do find the implications of CKD among disadvantaged populations very interesting as it reflects the continuous inequity of the health care system There is always an opportunity for improvement to reduce the disproportionate rates of CKD among African, American Indian, Hispanic, Asian and Aboriginal populations compared to their counterparts. Patient education and support is necessary for the reduction of rates. For instance, in regards to diabetes and hypertension, teaching patients the importance of a healthy and balanced diet is essential and providing food alternatives or substitutions is key. Kidney diseases are silent killers, which can largely affect quality of life (World Kidney Day, n.d.). It is important to assist and improve the quality of life of racial/ethnic groups affected by chronic kidney disease as well.
I want you to reply to each student 150 words each one below is an example from another student Hello Marylis!
I really enjoyed reading your post. You mentioned that the majority of kidney transplants come from patients who are deceased or clinically brain dead which was very interesting to learn about. I also like how you emphasized that a deceased donor has the ability to save up to eight lives, it is a very shocking yet an amazing bit of information. I agree that such a fact makes a loud statement and clearly displays the importance of organ donors. Furthermore, I was not aware that the process of donating a kidney, or any organ for that case, was so intensive. However, I agree that it is essential that such a rigorous process be taken in order to equip the client with a firm sense of autonomy in order to make the best decision that they see fit. All in all, I think you explained the process and importance of donating a kidney quite well. Great job!
