1> Consider the presenting issues and developmental implications of your assigned client, aged 19â29.
Assigned Client:
Name: Olivia Crane (F, 19 years)
Presenting Issues:
Oliviaâs mother, Carol (F, 42 years), made the appointment for Olivia but did not join her daughter for the first session. At the time the appointment was made, Oliviaâs mother stated that Olivia was having a very difficult time adjusting socially at college and does not have many friends. Olivia is currently home on term break, and her mother insisted that she seemed âmore depressed than usual.â
Olivia came to her session alone; initial small talk included asking her how college has been going. She responded that itâs âjust OK,â and that it isnât what she thought it would be. Olivia stated that everyone she meets is a snob, and all anyone cares about is partying. When asked if she had made any friends, Olivia responded that she â(doesnât) want to be friends with those people,â adding that she does not need friends to be happy.
Asking about her classes and how school was going, Olivia responded that she âdrew the hardest professors possibleâ from the random class assignments and snorted with disgust. She added that ânothing is good enough for them,â and that she is struggling academically (however, she does admit to having a 3.0+ GPA). Before the counselor could shift topics again, Olivia stated, âAnd donât even bother to ask about boys. After what my mother went through with my a-hole of a father, Iâm not planning on ever being tied downâ¦to anyone.â
Cultural Profile:
Oliviaâs family is Caucasian and of European ethnic descent; they are agnostic.
Family History:
Olivia is the younger of two children; she has a brother, Hunter (M, 22 years) who lives about 300 miles away. Olivia was born with low birth weight and had many health issues as a child; however, she has recovered well and is healthy physically. Oliviaâs mother was a single parent and received no support from Oliviaâs father; the father also had no contact with Olivia that she can remember. During Oliviaâs childhood, her mother worked two jobs while completing her higher education online. Oliviaâs older brother helped to take care of her in many ways, including making meals for them and keeping an eye on her. The family had no extended support system then and still doesnât.
