Tom is a 70-year old male who presents with complaints of increasing fatigue and aching in his legs for the past 3 months. The pain worsens when walking long distances and is relieved by elevation of his legs. He also reports a painless lesion on his right ankle. He is diagnosed with peripheral venous insufficiency. Tom has a past medical history of hypertension, dyslipidemia, and diabetes mellitus. He smoked 2 packs of cigarettes per day for 15 years until he stopped 20 years ago. Tom admits to drinking 1 beer about 3 nights per week and denies drug use. He lives with his wife in a single-family home and works in a hardware store.
