Warm-Up Activity 5.1
Part of being a psychologist is to face the ethical dilemmas and decisions that are part of this human services profession. Before beginning the assignment below, review: Ethical issues in the research and practice of applied developmental psychology.
Assignment
Prepare a reflection paper that analyzes how Western cultural views have changed regarding sexual orientation and gender roles during the past 50 years. Note any pivotal changes in the way the diagnoses regarding sexual orientation may have brought about, facilitated, or reflected this change in attitude.
In your paper, compare the various diagnoses in sexual and gender disorders to determine the criteria used to establish whether a particular practice or orientation was pathological or not. Then, while it may take you outside your own comfort zone, reflect on what you think should be the criteria for diagnosis of pathology in sexual and gender identity disorders; for example, harm to self, harm to others, harm to society, and how should this “harm” be defined? There is no “wrong” or “right” answer to this question; in fact, you may discover some ambiguities and uncertainties in your own thinking, some questions you might want to explore further. It is important, however, that you prepare a scholarly paper that is informed by critical thinking, ethical decision-making, and research on the topic.
Support your paper with references to three articles published in peer-reviewed journals.
Length: 5-7 pages; including three references to peer-reviewed journal articles
Your paper should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts that are presented in the course and provide new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards.
