We often use heuristics, or mental shortcuts, in our everyday reasoning and decision making. However, the examples of using heuristics have never been more evident as they have been during the COVID-19 pandemic. This has led to the spread of many false claims, etc. It seems that not even a full day goes by and someone posts a new false claim, without so much as looking up factual information on the topic. By training, I am a scientist, and all of you are scientists-in-training (I mean, you are, after all, psychology majors), and, to be honest, these false claims hurt my little scientist heart.
Give an example of a false claim that you’ve seen. Name the heuristic you think people are using when they believe that claim is true, explain why you think it’s that heuristic, and why people may have fallen victim to that heuristic (don’t just say that they used a mental shortcut…instead, explain why they thought it was believable). Then find something factual (from a peer-reviewed source) that shows that it’s a false claim. Make sure you cite the source using APA style, and explain what the source actually says about that claim (as an FYI, just about every peer-reviewed journal has made their COVID-19 articles free and accessible by anyone – so you should be able to access this info).
PLEASE PROVIDE A PEER REVIEWED ARTICLE IN APA STYLE FORMAT
