Welcome to Module 2 soon, everyone! By now, you should all be familiar with the course and have decided on a project topic.
CAPSTONE JOURNAL – ASSIGNMENT 1 OF 2:
You will continue to submit weekly journal entries as Assignment 1 until Week 7, when you reflect back on your journal for your final paper (which is your final paper of the RN-BSN program)!
DEVELOPING SMART GOALS AND OBJECTIVES FOR YOUR CAPSTONE PROJECT – ASSIGNMENT 2 OF 2:
IMPORTANT CLARIFICATION
In this assignment, you will first research sources on how to write SMART goals. This is the first box on the template. A COMMON ERROR is to list articles related to your topic here and not about generally “how to develop SMART goals” sources. This results in a major rubric point loss. Do not do this! PLEASE! If you write summaries in Part 1 about your chosen topic, you will receive no credit for that portion of the assignment, as per the rubric.
The rationale is for you to learn how to write SMART goals first, and then proceed to the second part of the assignment, using what you learned in Part 1 to develop your 3 goals and objectives.
First blank box on the template – SMART GOAL summaries:
Find 2 sources on the use of SMART goals/objectives: what are they, how are they used, and why they can be a useful tool. Summarize and cite content of each article by writing a summary paragraph for each. Your sources for this section must be from current sources. What is current? Any publication published 2016 or later. Objectives and Content grid:
Next you will fill out your grid addressing your topic. First, review the sample grid provided. There is a blank grid underneath. Start by creating 3 goals/objectives, written in SMART goal style. https://tips.uark.edu/using-blooms-taxonomy/ (Links to an external site.)

Literature Search to list references:
Do a literature search to select 3 current peer reviewed articles that address your topic for your Capstone Project. List 1 article for each goal, just like on the example. Use proper APA format (7th ed. APA manual). Please see Dr. Boyd’s Announcement with suggestions for APA resources below. Reminder: Articles must be published within the past 5 years to be considered current.
IMPORTANT: Do not list government sources (example – CDC, WHO or Joint Commission); blogs, articles from newspapers or non-peer reviewed magazines as your required references. Your source for each goal MUST be a current peer-reviewed article. Please see the Readings tab in Module 2 for great librarian support. Use your resources, as needed!
As you write each goal, remember to include a % of the audience, a time frame and the Bloom term as your primary verb. AGAIN…look at the example provided and be sure you are following this format to compose your goals. Be sure to keep your outcomes concise. You must have at least one short term and one long term goal; the third can be either short or long term.
For example, if I am teaching my audience about Advanced Directives, I may use the following short term outcome (the Bloom term is in bold type):
