Welcome to your first video discussion this week here in CEFS 501! I look forward to engaging with you all in this video discussion focused on informed consent.
As you all have read between your textbooks and journal articles, informed consent is one of the most important aspects of the counseling relationship. It sets the stage for us as counselors to begin our work with the client. This week you will be finding an example of an informed consent document from a licensed mental health counselor in your state and compare and contrast (finding the similarities and differences) between the form and the American Counseling Association ([ACA], 2014) Code of Ethics and your state counseling licensure board rules and regulations regarding informed consent. You will then provide your reaction to the form.
To locate a suitable document, do a google search for “professional counseling informed consent form in [add your state here]” For example, if someone lived in Oregon, they would search for professional counseling informed consent form in OR. I would use those exact words in your search terms. Look at a few. If you click the images, they will expand. Make sure it is a form from a counselor’s practice website. Download the form and get the information so you can cite it in your post. Compare the components provided on the document to those required by the ACA (2014) Code of Ethics and what your state counseling licensure board rules and regulations require regarding informed consent. Then, note what stands out to you and what you like or do not like about the document and other reactions.
Please make sure you incorporate a scholarly source outside of your textbooks and course materials for maximum points. Look at the materials provided to you regarding scholarly sources. As a gentle reminder all sources must be connected to mental health counseling, not any other mental health discipline. For best results, be sure to answer all parts of the prompt in the order they are presented. Ideally you will have verbal citations and written references for the informed consent document, the ACA (2014) Code of Ethics, your state counselor licensure board rules and regulations and your scholarly source. The ACA Code of Ethics and your state counselor licensure board rules and regulations are not scholarly sources. Remember every source you use, you must verbally cite in your videos and provide a written reference.
In addition to your thread post, you are required to provide a substantial response to at least one classmate’s initial video post or a response to a question posed by me. The first submission will be used for grading so make sure that response meets the requirements.
In your response to your classmate, make sure your post focuses on an important point made by your peer. Please do not just repeat what they stated. You all are talking about the same topic, so yes, they likely found the same information you did. Find something different in their post. What stands out in their post? What did they not address? What can you add to it? These are examples of items that are considered to be substantial. Do not refer back to what you stated in your post. This is your response to your classmate; it is not about your post. You are not comparing their post to yours. Then, find a scholarly source that supports your position.
Whether recording your initial post or response, I encourage you to write out your response to gather your thoughts. Insert your citations just like you would for a paper. This will help you when recording. You are provided with a step-by-step guide on how to upload your video to Kaltura and embed your post into the discussion forum. It is important that you follow these instructions to ensure your post is embedded correctly, as all video discussions posts must be uploaded via Kaltura. Your post must be embedded in the forum. Please make sure to pay attention to details as only the first submission will be accepted for grading. Under your embedded video post, add your references section in APA 7th edition format. This may be in the same post or as a reply to your post. In your references section, the reference heading must be written in centered and bold format. Use the example APA 7th edition paper provided to you as you will see examples of many types of references. Please also make sure to utilize your APA 7th edition Manual, too. Your state board rules are written like state laws, not websites. The informed consent document reference is formatted like a webpage. The only writing allowed in your post is the references section. Please do not include any other writing. Please do not embed links to your video or upload or attach files or documents.
Lastly, please make sure to review the video discussion instructions and rubric so that you know what I am looking for when I am reviewing your work. Make sure your video and audio are clear and that you are within the required time limits. If I am unable to view your video, you will be required to resubmit.
